Mission
The PCO Green Team’s purpose is to display and encourage a commitment to stewardship of the earth and all things on it as creations of God. This stewardship extends to the church’s facilities, our homes, and our communities. Our stewardship begins by informing our own behaviors and sharing ideas and knowledge to preserve our earth and its climate.
Solar Energy
PCO is proud to have installed solar panels in March of 2023. Since then we have fully offset our energy usage! Learn more.
Battery Recycling
To date we have recycled 136 lbs. of batteries. Learn more.
Pill Bottle Re-Use
We collect used prescription bottles and package them to send to Matthew 25: Ministries in Cincinnati for re-use around the world; to date we have returned 1260 pill bottles. Learn more.
In- House Recycling
We have in-house recycling for daily use items as well as pill bottles and batteries.
Native Plants
PCO is in process of removal of invasive species and replanting of native plants.
Composting
Our primary goal in composting at the church is to set an example of how we can minimize what goes into garbage landfills.
Paper Products
Food Insecurity and Sustainable Practices
Food Rescue USA is a nationwide organization that operates in the Greater Lansing area. Using a web-based app, they engage volunteers to transfer fresh food surpluses from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure. (Food waste remains one of the top solutions to global warming.) Their model empowers communities to serve themselves, as all food donors, rescuers, and agency partners are members of the communities where services operate. Food Rescue USA is seeking volunteers to rescue food and transport it to receiving agencies within our Lansing community. You can learn more and volunteer at FoodRescue.us.
Earth Care
The Green Team has been certified as an Earth Care Congregation by PCUSA for the past three years reflecting our church’s commitment to environmental stewardship in worship, education, facilities, and outreach.
