Advent House/Bagged lunches

Members of the PCO Mission Committee-- along with Pastor Peggy and her husband-- coordinated the preparation of 125 bagged lunches for delivery to Advent House, a Lansing based nonprofit housed in North Westminster Presbyterian Church. Congregation kids decorated the paper lunch bags with a variety of colorful drawings. Church members donated apples, applesauce, cookies and bottled water. Mission funds provided KFC chicken and biscuits to complete the lunches. The lunches were bagged and delivered to Advent House by volunteers, including Bill Given who sits on Advent House’s board, on August 22, 2020. Susan Cancro, Advent House Executive Director, ...

Communities in Schools-Michigan

Communities in Schools and PCO PCO’s connection with Communities in Schools (CIS) of Michigan started in 2012 and has included site visits, financial donations, contributions of needed items, and members volunteering at a Literacy Day. CIS is part of a national network working to ensure that all students—including those most at risk such as those living in homeless shelters and foster children--have what they need to stay in school and on a path to a brighter future. Working directly inside more than 46 schools and community sites across the state, Communities in Schools connects kids to caring adults and community resources designed to help ...

Michigan Refugee Hope/Samaritas

The PCO Mission Committee began supporting Michigan Refugee Hope (the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Program administered by Samaritas Social Services of Michigan) efforts at Faith Lutheran Church in Okemos beginning in 2018. Faith Lutheran members provide housing, food support and mentoring for youth who have fled from war, violence or persecution in dozens of countries. By the time they get to the United States, they’ve been separated from and often lost contact with parents and other family members who can care for them and have often suffered great traumas – and they’re not even 18 years old. At the present time Faith Lutheran is hosting 5 ...

Feeding the Hungry in the Greater Lansing Area

At the April 2020 meeting of the PCO Mission Committee it was noted that feeding the hungry is an escalating concern-even in the Lansing area. While the shopping cart in Fellowship Hall remains empty because we cannot meet in person at this time, Mission Committee is continuing to donate funds to those organizations supplying food to those in need. At our meeting we approved donations to the Greater Lansing Food Bank, CASS Community Social Services and Advent House.  We would especially like to highlight Advent House. During the COVID-19 crisis Advent House continues to provide weekend meals at the Weekend Day Shelters  on both Saturday and Sunday. ...

Cass Mission Trip Photos

Thank all of you for your kind gifts of sandwiches, snacks, fruit, cookies (both Oreos and HOMEMADE!), water, and hand sanitizer for the mission trip on March 7.  And a special thank you to Gary and Keith, who did a site visit and planning for our beautiful sunny mission trip.  It was wonderful to work on the four Tiny Homes knowing all of the support we had from others in the congregation.

Cass Mission Trip, March 7

In 2019 the PCO Mission Committee organized volunteers to build a wall, build storage shelves and sort donated clothes at CASS headquarters in Detroit.  In 2020 we will have a less challenging mission that will provide fun work for all HGTV skill levels! Ellen Hoekstra has arranged for our volunteers to perform work on the newest "Tiny Home"-the 21st little house built-that donations from our church have helped build. The work will include priming and painting the walls and ceilings, and then laying the new floor. If we can't all squeeze into the little house assigned to us there are other tiny houses that would benefit from similar work so we can ...
